Mahatsara Rural Education Project
Mahatsara is a non-profit organization that was created by individuals in Madagascar who saw a need for development in their village, Ambohimiadana. In English, Mahatsara literally means ‘getting better, or improving’ and that is exactly what it aims to do. Having recognized a deficiency in early childhood education, environmental awareness, nutrition and literacy, UCCAN is teaming up with Mahatsara to start a pre-school in their village. The pre-school is the first project of many in a 10 year plan that will concentrate on improving the quality of life in rural Madagascar.

Miantso Women and Children’s Centre
Miantso Women and Children’s Centre is a nutrition and support program for young, struggling mothers and their children. We provide medical care as well as access to education and nutritious meals for families in need. By supporting mothers through job training and education, we help keep families together and reduce the number of orphaned and abandoned children living on the streets of Madagascar.
Tangaina Orphanage: A Home for Children
Tangaina is a small orphanage that is home to 35 youth ranging in age from 5 to 20 yrs. We strongly believe that being born into poverty need not stand in the way of a healthy lifestyle and education. We strive to ensure that each child will continue to receive all of the opportunities they deserve, including education & tutoring, shelter, nutritious meals, access to healthcare, and extra-curricular activities. Tangaina currently struggles to find both the human and economic resources needed to satisfy these primary objectives.
Akany Avoko Children’s Home
Akany Avoko started as a refuge for young girls who would otherwise be in prison awaiting trial to prove their innocence against allegations of petty crime. Since the beginning it has come to offer shelter, education and support to over 160 children and young adults who now live at the centre year round.
