Madagascar Facts:

1) As a country designated as highly in need of improvement Madagascar has implemented a nation- wide measles immunization supplementary program.

2) 1-5% of men in Madagascar (between the ages of15-25) have HIV

·       Lessthan 1% of women in Madagascar (between the ages of 15-25) have HIV * this is far better than statistics in mainland/ sub-Saharan Africa.

3) Madagascar has made “no progress” (less than .5%) in reducing the underwieght prevalence in children under 5

  • 42% of Malagasy children under 5 are considered underweight

  • Children in rural areas are twice as likely to be underweight as children in urban are

4) 50-89%of children in Madagascar are enrolled in Primary School however less than 50% of children in  Madagascar go on toSecondary School.

  • The lowest levels of secondary school attendance are in poor and rural are

5) Madagascar is deemed to have made insufficient progress in reducing  child mortality

  • Under 5 mortality is 40/1000 births

  • Annual rate of reduction has been 1-3.9% (minimal in relation to the Millennium Development Goals)

6)  28% of Malagasy women respondedthat a husband or partner is justified in hitting or beating his wife under certain circumstances

As you can see, the populations most vulnerable and in need of support are children and women. All of our projects involve educating and aiding these particular populations. The health and education of children in the rural areas are of concern and this is why we have formed a partnership with the rural community of Mahatsara.
